The wide availability of Marais' music on CDs is a recent phenomenon. Prior to 1990, anyone interested in the music of this French master would have been hard-pressed to find a reasonable selection of recordings outside of Europe. However, because of the increased popularity of French Baroque music, and the renewed interest in the viol, Marais' compositions are being widely interpreted today. Among the leading exponents of the viol, Jordi Savall is, perhaps, the best known. Savall recently completed recording Marais' five books for bass viol, and these recordings provide the best introduction to Marais' music. Other well-known musicians who have interpreted the composer's work include Sigiswald & Wieland Kuijken, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Charles Medlam, and William Hunt.
