Task 01 - Basics

Task 01 will be a compilation of several small tasks, each done as a post-session exercise.

1.1 Listserv signup

Sign up to the class listserv

1.2 Newsletter signup

Sign up for two newsletters

subscribe to Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox

subscribe to at least one additional newsletter of your choosing

1.3 Download and install software

Using shareware,unc.edu, download and install SSH

show me that you have the software on your PC by showing me that you know how to do a screen capture

1.4 UNIX skills

demonstrate some basic UNIX functional skills

create a password protected directory in your public_html space on ISIS

tell me in an email the name of your directory and the userid and password I will need to use to access it

1.5 Internet information tools - who owns domain names

use WHOIS to find the owner of a domain name

Please find out who owns the domain name associated with one of the mailing lists you signed up for.

1.6 Internet information tools - how do packets travel

Trace the route of packets from your client back to a server

Please run a traceroute on domain name and copy and paste a screenshot of your results into a file.

If you need to see what the subtasks will look like, they will be shown on the daily subtask sheets.

These first tasks are individually small and discrete, so there really isn't a visual model to follow.
