LIS 450RRL: GRANTWRITING AND FUNDRAISING

Assignment: FUNDING SOURCES

Summer 2001

Assignment Due: June 20

Please use the funding agency prospect form or a reasonable facsimile thereof. [Note: If you wish to pursue the fundraising plan option rather than the grantwriting proposal, you may wish to generate an individual prospect form. Your categories will be different, of course. Please contact me if you wish to try this and we'll work something out.

Create a web page entitled "Funding Sources for ...". For the elipsis, substitute the name (or a name if your organization is representative rather than real) and add the kind of library (or other information agency) it is and its geographic location, e.g. small public library in Illinois, medium-sized academic library in Alaska, elementary school library in Illinois, community agency in Chicago, etc. Provide a list of the agencies you have selected as targets and link each one to a prospect form. (Note: You will probably not be able to supply all the information requested on the prospect form but do the best you can. The contact information at the bottom is there for future use. A record of contacts for fundraising prospects is probably even more important.) Provide a brief paragraph on the sources you used to identify these prospects. You may also wish to provide some indication of why you think each of the agencies selected might be a good match for your organization's interests.

Students taking the course for 1/2 credit should identify two possible funding sources, preferably one private and one public. Jot down one or more fundable ideas that might interest these agencies. Students taking the course for 1 credit should identify four or five possible funding sources, preferably divided between private and public. Jot down one or more fundable ideas for each one. The purpose of this exercise is to identify sources that might support needs of your organization and its clientele.

Look for both national and state sources. Provide URLs if available. Use both print and web sources to find good prospects. You may find the Funding Sources web page and the Resources page helpful in your search.

Post your best source to the Bulletin Board. Take some time to read one or two others and post an encouraging comment to the authors.

This assignment is to be done individually.
