Accomodations and Around Town

This section is designed to introduce Chapel Hill to our out-of-town partners. For those of you already acquainted with town, you can contribute links to your favorite sights or sounds by sending them to Brian Dietz. Or, if you have any questions, general or specific, send them to Brian.

After arriving at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, meeting partners will be shuttled to Carolina Inn, an historic hotel on the UNC-CH campus. From the Carolina Inn it is a brief walk to Wilson Library and Manning Hall, where our meeting will take place; it is also a two-block walk to downtown Chapel Hill. On the way downtown you will pass the Ackland Art Museum. If you'd like to see a movie while here, both the Carolina Theater and the Varsity are within three blocks of the Inn (both links are to the theaters' listings at the trianlge.com website). After dinner Thursday, you can take in a free showing of the 1935 movie "Top Hat." The showing, outside Lenoir Hall at 8:30, is part of the Media Resource Center's Summer Film Festival. If sitting in the dark after dinner helps your digestion but the selection isn't to your liking, you could try the Morehead Planetarium. Current shows explore Mars and the children's book series "The Magic Treehouse."

The Chapel Hill Orange County Visitors Bureau website is a good place to start finding out about the area. You may also want to link to the area's newspaper, the News & Observer. To get an alternative take on the news and area check out the Independent. The University suggests visiting these notable campus landmarks. While in Chapel Hill you may also want to head one town west to Carborro. It is worth noting that Chapel Hill has an excellent public transportation system. The best part about it: it's free to all. Visit their website to view routes; free route maps are available on all buses.

The University has maps online, including in PDF format. Also, there will maps included in your meeting brochure. We're sure you're going to enjoy your stay here in Chapel Hill.
