Abstract

How do you create a digital collection management system that allows the creation of rich metadata for unique collections but is still accessible across disciplines? DiMeMa encountered this challenge when developing the CONTENTdm software and found a solution by supporting custom metadata sets mapped to Dublin Core. Using a text based database and XML encoding provided the flexibility to support easily customizable data elements that could be mapped to a common metadata set to facilitate cross-collection searching. The resulting system has proven an effective application for diverse institutions and a varied array of collections.
