ALISE 2003 Annual Conference, January 21-24, Philadelphia, PA

This year's Poster Session will take place on:
Wednesday, January 22, 2003

The schedule is as follows (updated Nov. 8/02):

TBA Doctoral Poster Session Setup.

TBA Judging of Doctoral Posters

TBA Doctoral Student Reception, Poster Session,
and Awards

Each year the ALISE Doctoral Students Special Interest Group organizes a research poster session, which is included in the ALISE conference program. The event is an opportunity for doctoral students to introduce themselves and their work to their future colleagues. Sharing research activities with the larger community and obtaining feedback in an informal setting are invaluable experiences.

Members of the ALISE Research Committee judge the posters and select first, second, and third-place winners. The Jean Tague-Sutcliffe Award will be presented to the first-place winner. Traditionally, a reception is held after the judging and announcement of winners.

Guidelines for Participants:

  1. The posters should be mounted on a foam core base measuring approximately 20 x 30 inches. (Oversize posters risk being disqualified.) Posters will be judged on significance of the research, quality of the research design and methodology, and on the organization, clarity and aesthetics of the poster. Students are responsible for providing their own materials to construct posters. Easels will be provided by the conference hotel.

  2. Students are expected to remain near their posters to verbally present their research and to answer any questions spectators may have. The student's ability to describe and discuss the research may be taken into account as the judges narrow the pool of possible winners to a "short list.

  3. Posters may describe completed research or work that is underway. They may represent the student's dissertation work or other research separate from the dissertation. They may be about any aspect of the student's research: proposal, theoretical framework, methodology, findings, etc.

  4. Participants may use laptops to supplement their poster presentations, but laptops are NOT required nor should they be considered as a substitute for a poster. Participants who choose to bring laptops should be aware that ALISE will not be able to provide technical support or live Internet connections.

  5. Only current PhD students and those who have completed their PhD within the past 12 months - but who do not hold full-time faculty status - are eligible to participate.

  6. Past poster session winners are welcome to participate in the session and may win awards provided they present on different research.

  7. Those chosen as first, second, and third-place winners MUST leave their posters on display in the ALISE registration area for the remainder of the conference. If the student will not be attending the entire conference, s/he must make arrangements with a colleague from his/her institution for the care of the poster. ALISE will not be responsible for the return of uncollected posters.

Often, there are many exceptional posters on display at the event. The judges may request that students, whose posters are members of this "short list," be announced as honorable mentions.

Please keep in mind that posters are left on display not only for the benefit of students wishing to view those posters judged to be exceptional, but also for other conference-goers wishing to do the same. Students hoping to receive optimal exposure for their efforts will welcome the display opportunity.

  8. ALISE student membership is strongly encouraged.

Note: In the past, many doctoral students have opted to have business cards and/or printed copies of their abstracts handy for those who may request the information.

Placement of the posters around the room will be done alphabetically, by the student's last name. This is necessary to facilitate the judging in the time frame allotted.
