Today's Troubleshooting Example

ConnectionAlarm

Seven Layers

  • Please
  • Do
  • Not
  • Take
  • Sales
  • Person's
  • Advice

Navigating Layer 1

  • plug it in! turn it on!

Navigating Layer 2

  • Ethernet: you just need to know the destination's MAC address
  • (assuming the destination can "hear" you on the local LAN)
  • ARP helps here
  • LAN delivery

Navigating Layer 3

  • IP: you need to know the destination's IP address, and your default router (internet gateway for your LAN) has to know how to reach that IP address range (or send packets to its default router!)
  • WAN delivery

Navigating Layer 4

  • the packet has been delivered to the machine, now what?
  • the application port uniquely identifies to the OS which application wants the packet

Important

IP Basics

  • what's my IP address, netmask, and gateway?
    • translate netmask to binary ... why?
    • neighbors ... why?

Other Skills

  • ARP ... why?
  • tools for troubleshooting ... why?
  • a dose of security and IPv6 ... why?

Projects

  • ProjectExample
  • it's not hard ... ask me questions!
    • 30% SNMP: show that you can use it effectively
    • 30% packet capture: you captured packets
    • 40% analysis: what do those data mean? can you answer the project question? if not, what else would you need to know and where would you start?

Project Report

  • Write an analysis that mentions SNMP and packet capture. You should talk to your team members! This is a group effort. You should turn in a group report.
  • If you feel that your project grade should be different from your team, send me email or turn in a single page with your name, your project, and your reasons.
    • Bring up problems early!
  • You are also free (minority report, dissenting opinion, whatever) to write individual reports.
  • If you do not include visible packet capture in your group report, please put a copy in /afs/isis/home/h/o/hope/DropBox.

Project Presentation

  • This should be the group analysis in verbal form. If there is a minority opinion, that can be defended now.
  • You have up to 20 minutes during the last class for your presentation.
