This Class
- Hi!
- An example of "how we do it" with a side of "I'd love to put this on the final" ...
- Your presentations, in volunteer order
- Presentations should cover the standard project (SNMP, packet capture, analysis) or an in-depth topic.
- Please hand in your project write-up, or (if you feel demonstrated those three points in your presentation well enough) at least a sheet of paper (that I can provide) with your team focus and team members' names.
- Course Evaluation
- I need a volunteer to deliver these to the SILS office. If you're part of SILS, you can put the evaluations in your box (secure) and let Marcia Tauber know to pick 'em up there.
- I will be out of the room while you fill these out, but I'll just be at the end of the hall (northwest corner) if you want to talk to me after class.

Real-life Example
This morning, administrator access to some central ITS servers went away! Ack! Admin made quick phone call to Networking! (Side note: the Remedy ticket process would have solved this faster.)
- What IP addresses were unreachable?
- we pinged those two addresses, and couldn't reach them either
- we ran a traceroute, and noticed that both stopped at the firewall (for these important and protected central servers)
- we called "the firewall guy" and he backed out this morning's change ...
- ... and all was well again!
Lesson from that Example
- Don't underestimate the usefulness of simple tools like ping and traceroute! Simple doesn't mean dumb.
- The difference between trouble and a problem is that you've collected information to describe the problem, while trouble is just a collection of symptoms (is it a bug? a feature?). Once you describe what it is, you have a problem that you can work on to solve.
Presentations!
Who wants to volunteer to go first? second? and so on?
I love this part, and I haven't been disappointed yet!
Course Evaluation
Who will collect and turn these in for me?
Don't forget: final exam will be posted next Wednesday 6 PM, due the following Wednesday 6 PM. Contact me with any problems; don't suffer in silence. I will send you email confirmation when I see your final exam (although I won't send email while I'm asleep or in meetings, so don't panic right away).
