Liberty Postcards

There are literally thousands of postcards of the Statue of Liberty that have been circulating in the past century. There is quite a contrast in formality, style, and seriousness between the older ones posted below and the newer ones shown below them.

This 1906 postcard has glitter on the lettering "Souvenir of New York" with just a tiny space at the bottom for a signature. Advances in digital technology have allowed me to "clean up" the faded marks on the address side above. Do the mouse-over to see. (1¢ postage?!!)

In 1948 there's still 1¢ postage! Had to play with the contrast, brightness and saturation so that the handwriting is legible online. Can you believe they used to let folks climb the ladder inside the torch and stand outside the flame?

Here are some other fun postcards from my collection.
