Project Title:
Automated Information Extraction from Electronic Health Records

Welcome! This website chronicles our research for the 2007-2008 year.

This project will extend our previous research on automated information extraction from electronic health records. The project is multidisciplinary and is lead jointly by Cathy Blake, a faculty member in the School of Information and Library Science, and Sue West, who amongst other titles is a faculty member in the Department of Epidemiology, UNC School of Public Health. As a team with three undergraduate women, our vision for this project is that we will work closely together to develop both automated methods to extract information, and the gold standard from an existing processed set of records.

Project Goals

(1) To what degree does a concept representation help in extracting medical conditions and side-effects?

(2) To what degree does deep language processing enable the detection of negated findings?

(3) To what degree does deep language processing enable differentiation between current and historical medical history in particular previous medications?

(4) How well do automated information extraction techniques work with respect to identifying data from electronic medical records that is critical for pharmacoepidemiology research?
