What's a Whedonverse?

The "Whedonverse" refers to the universe created by Joss Whedon (also called the "Jossverse" and "Buffyverse"), which includes the worlds, characters, and events of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) and Angel: the Series (1999-2004). Read more about the Whedonverse and the fan fic set there on the About page.

What's fan fic?

Fan fic, or fan fiction, is an original story set in the universe of a television show, book, movie, or other cultural item. For example, Buffy fic includes stories that take place in Sunnydale, star Buffy, Willow, and Xander, and strive for a sense of connection to the "canon" of the show (i.e., the text of the show). There are many permutations of fan fic, which you can read about on the Genre page.

Why an Online Catalog?

Well, first off, because I'm a librarian, and that's what we do. I'm working on my masters paper, which is exploring some potential roles for librarians in fan fic communities. Librarians help users find information, by describing, cataloging, and preserving information and cultural material. Why we're not doing that for fan fic is beyond me. This catalog is my attempt to apply library science skills to systematically describe fan fic as it exists online today, in various forms (on personal web sites, in fic archives, and in blogs like LiveJournal). It's simplistic, but it's a start. Oh, and you can read about my masters paper if you're so inclined.

What's on this site?

Here you'll find the catalog, which you can search to find fic by author, genre, and/or main character. There are a limited number of records available, so go easy with your search!

You'll also find the web access (password protected) to enter new records. Instructions on how to do it correctly are included.

About Buffy Fic tells you a bit about the material we're cataloging. Characters gives some bare-bones description of the major characters on the two shows, and Genres begins to scratch the surface of the many genres which have emerged within fan fic. Archives will direct you to some multi-author archives, where you can start digging in and reading some fic.
