THE EMPTY QUARTER
The Empty Quarter lies in the south-eastern part of Saudi Arabia. Known in Arabic as the Rub al-Khali (Great Sandy Desert), this area is largely unexplored.
The Empty Quarter has been documented for not receiving any rain for 10 years!!
This desert spans an estimated area of 300,000 square miles. All of the Empty Quarter is not sand, one can find mountains and plateaus in the south-eastern area. In the summer, the temperature is usually around 48 degrees Celsius (130 degrees F.) Sand storms are frequent and can last around 4 days!
Another interesting fact about Saudi Arabia is that it has no permanent rivers or lakes. Though you can find wadis(water wells) in the rainy season. Vegetation is very sparse and few animals live in this arid region.
