La Barre and Other Musicians.
Group portrait attributed to Robert Tournières, c.1710 (National Gallery, London)

This painting contains what is thought to be one of the few likenesses of Marin Marais. He is seated at the left and is shown holding a viol. In this scene, he forms part of a group of musicians headed by La Barre, who is shown turning the pages of the musical score of hisTrio Sonatas of 1707. The man seated at the far right is the wealthy amateur who commissioned the painting to show his inclusion in La Barre's musical circle.
