The aim of Greenstone Digital Library software suite is to empower users, particularly in universities, libraries and other public service institutions, to build their own digital libraries. As the number of users, developers and language interfaces has increased, the New Zealand Digital Library (NZDL, http://www.nzdl.org) project at the Computer Science Department of the University of Waikato has tried to keep pace with user needs by establishing a number of machine- and human-mediated user services, and by promoting training and development activities through several fruitful international partnerships.

Why this survey?

The NZDL team, in consultation with its international sponsors, feels that, to maintain the progress in improvement and dissemination of Greenstone, new organizational and methodological approaches should be considered to satisfy the growing numbers of Greenstone users, particularly in developing countries. We therefore are taking this opportunity to ask Greenstone users and developers about the adequacy of the present Greenstone support and their views on ways to improve it.

Who should complete this survey?

All users and developers are invited to complete the present questionnaire, whether you install Greenstone, build collections, promote Greenstone, teach Greenstone usage, and/or work to develop Greenstone in other ways.

Survey contents and instructions.

The survey is composed of three sections. Section I includes general questions and addresses Greenstone support mechanisms, Section II Greenstone collections and software development, and Section III, an optional supplementary section, contact information for further development of support mechanisms and other follow-up activities. In Section III, you will be able to submit information about online collections you developed with Greenstone to be included in an online directory. Please expect approximately 11-17 minutes to complete Sections I and II. Time to complete Section III will vary. Though we encourage you to complete as many of the questions as possible, you are not required to complete all the questions
