Introduction and Scope
Woody Allen's career as a writer, comedian, actor, and filmmaker has spanned over three decades, and shows no signs of waning. A prolific artist involved in nearly fifty films to date, Woody Allen has masterfully used both humor and drama to explore such common themes as love, death, anxiety, illusion, identity and integrity. His work is admittedly a matter of taste, his success best measured not by box office receipts but by the unique artistry he employs in telling the stories he creates. The complexity of his work, and the broad range of critical opinion on it, make Woody Allen a likely subject of serious study.
Much has been written about Woody Allen, and he will undoubtedly remain the subject of analysis and criticism for years to come. This pathfinder offers an introduction to the types of sources that the beginning researcher can consult for information about Allen's themes and artistic process. While it is intended as a bibliographic aid for those researching Woody Allen from a scholarly perspective, this pathfinder can also serve as a guide for fans of his work. Furthermore, it can be adapted to research and inquiry on others in the entertainment industry. This should not be considered an exhaustive bibliography of available literature, but rather a tool to help direct the research process.
Key to Locations
This pathfinder is designed specifically for students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; as such, the sources have been limited to those located on, or accessible from, the UNC-CH campus. Locations within the UNC-CH library system are abbreviated as follows:

Frequently Mentioned Works
The following works are often cited in research material on Woody Allen.
This insightful academic study of Woody Allen's work, originally published in 1979 and expanded in 1991, is widely cited as the definitive and most authoritative analysis of the subject. Maurice Yacowar defines the Woody Allen persona and perceptively examines Allen's prose, plays, and films in an effort to define the themes, structure, and artistry of his work. In so doing, he concludes Allen is "a serious, probing artist with a consistent and distinctive vision [who] happens to work in the comic mode" (Introduction). The extensive footnotes and comprehensive bibliography are valuable research tools.
One of the earliest books about Woody Allen, On Being Funny is the product of several years of interviews conducted by the author while he was granted full access to Allen and his ongoing projects, and therefore consists largely of Allen's personal observations. In an informative and entertaining fashion, Lax examines Allen's artistry by showing the comedian at work, and thereby relates Allen's complex approach to his material.
"This book examines a specific breed of clown-the one who translated comedy into cinematic terms-and tries to establish that he did think and to indicate how…. It begins with the intention of revealing serious thought in the comic film form. And it assumes that the best comedies (even the funniest comedies) are those which achieve something that is more than simply funny" (Introduction).
Woody Allen information: In the chapter entitled "From Parody to Psychocomedy: Woody Allen and Others," Mast analyzes Woody Allen's work through 1978, and on this basis proclaims "he may not only be the best American comic filmmaker of his age but, arguably, the best American filmmaker of his age, period" (p. 319).
Encyclopedias and Dictionaries
These sources are excellent starting points for film study in general and Woody Allen in particular.
The four volumes of this impressive work deal with Films, Directors, Actors and Actresses, and Writers and Production Artists, respectively, and are "intended to represent the wide range of interests within North American, British, and European film scholarship and criticism." The entries for individuals include "a brief biography, a complete filmography, a selected bibliography of works on and by the entrant, and an expository essay by a specialist in the field." The entries in the films volume include "production information, lists of casts and crew, a selected bibliography of works about the film, and an essay by a specialist in the field" (Editor's Notes). This well illustrated and quite readable series is a tremendous source of information and a valuable starting point for any researcher.
Woody Allen information: Three of Woody Allen's films are covered in the first volume, and he is the subject of entries in both the Directors volume and Actors and Actresses volume. There is little overlap between the lengthy bibliographies accompanying each entry, and the essays which follow are insightful and well-written.
Combining discussions of comedy genres, themes, characters, and notable writers and performers, this work attempts to "summarize the major trends in the history of American film comedy, and to study their influences on contemporary comedy." It also critiques approximately 150 films which "uniquely exemplify America's social values at the time of their release while defining the American sense of humor" (Preface).
Woody Allen information: Woody Allen is well represented in this work. His two-page biographical entry charts the comic themes of his films through the 1987 Radio Days. Nine of his films are analyzed as separate entries.
"This ranks near the top of all one-volume encyclopedias for its breadth and accuracy. Instead of entries for films, however, Katz emphasizes biographical material (directors, producers, screenwriters, cinematographers, art directors, composers, film editors, and performers) and topical material (foreign cinema, techniques, events, and organizations). Biographical entries include credits, even for television films" (On the Screen, p. 11). Its fairly comprehensive nature, especially with respect to the American filmmakers, makes this a worthwhile source for an overview of the film industry.
Woody Allen information: The full-page Woody Allen entry describes his background in comedy as well as the progression of his films through the 1992 Shadows and Fog, and includes a complete filmography through 1996.
A useful companion to any study of film is a dictionary of terms relating to concepts that might be encountered in film criticism and scholarly treatments of a filmmaker's work. A small volume, this particular work defines approximately six hundred terms relating to "the techniques, concepts, genres, and styles that have evolved as a part of cinematic expression and analysis" (Preface), and as such would be useful to the beginning researcher. It incorporates good use of film stills and photographs to illustrate many terms. Cross-references are provided, and the "Term and Film Title Index" facilitates access to named persons whose work is cited in the definitions.
Woody Allen information: Woody Allen's work is specifically cited as an example in seven definitions.
Bibliographies
These bibliographies are valuable for guiding the researcher through the profusion of literature available on Woody Allen, his films, and the motion picture industry.
Designed to introduce the user to the important English-language reference works in the fields of motion pictures and television, this well-organized work describes over 700 sources by type -- bibliographic guides; dictionaries and encyclopedias; indexes, abstracts, and databases; biographies; credits, film reviews and television programming; catalogs; directories and yearbooks; filmographies and videographies; bibliographies; handbooks and miscellaneous sources; core periodicals; research centers and archives; societies and associations. Concise and clearly written annotations provide excellent guidance through the wealth of available resources.
Considered "the most comprehensive English-language bibliography of motion picture literature" (On the Screen, p. 5), this work reviews nearly 7,000 books about film. Among the types covered are biographies, memoirs, critical studies, histories, reference works, and published scripts. The citations are critically and authoritatively annotated in clear and entertaining manner. The second volume is an extensive index to authors, films, personalities, and general subjects. Easy to use, this work serves as a valuable starting place for film research.
This bibliography serves as a research guide to articles appearing in 340 English language magazines and periodicals from 1900 through October 1972. Both mainstream magazines and more specialized film journals are indexed; the articles cited, primarily biographical or career-oriented in nature, pertain to over 2,300 directors, filmmakers, and animators. Film reviews were excluded unless they were "expanded to include critical or analytical conclusions about the artists and/or work which might have research value beyond the review of a given work" (Introduction). While dated, this work is a good source for material published prior to the time period covered by many indexing tools.
Abstracts and Indexes
While in different formats -- print, web-based, and CD-ROM -- all of these resources will lead you to scholarly writings on Woody Allen and his films, and may assist you in evaluating which works will be most useful to your research.
Designed for use by either the specialist or the general reader, this author-subject index to the international periodical literature of film, television and video is printed quarterly with annual cumulations. Several hundred primarily media-oriented journals from North and South America and Europe are indexed. In addition to the author's name and over one thousand subject headings, articles are indexed under the names of individual screenwriters, performers, directors, cinematographers, professional societies, and corporations, and indicate the presence of filmographies, credits, biographical data or interviews. This comprehensive survey is a good source of both popular and scholarly writing on film.

Note: The print version of Book Review Digest, dating back to 1906, can be found at Davis Ref. Row 2 Z1219 .C96; it should be consulted for reviews of books published prior to 1983.
Journals
As a search of any indexing tool will indicate, the following journals frequently publish articles, aside from film reviews, on Woody Allen's work. These journals are also excellent sources for general research into the art of the cinema.
Current issues of these periodicals can be found in the Davis Library Serials Department; call numbers given are for bound issues located in the Davis Library Stacks.
Considered a superior film magazine, Sight and Sound presents both scholarly and popular articles on contemporary and classic cinema, film history and theory, in addition to excellent film, book, and video reviews.
This scholarly journal focuses on the relationship between film and literature, as well as the problems inherent in adapting fiction and drama to film, and covers film genres, theory and criticism.
Featuring contributions from many outspoken American scholars, writers, and critics, Cineaste offers thoughtful commentary on American and international films for a general audience.
Adopting a variety of a sociocultural perspectives, this scholarly journal directs critical attention to American films and their audiences, stars, and directors.
No study of a filmmaker would be complete without reference to critical analyses of his work. The following compilations will provide and/or direct you to both scholarly and popular film reviews.
Supplemented by:
The original 10-volume work, issued in two series, provides credits, synopses and signed critical analyses for more than 1,200 selected English-language films released from 1927-1981. The detailed essays stress the aspects of the film most crucial to its success or importance. The work was developed primarily as a resource for educational reference, but indexes for directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, editors, and performers make it easy to navigate.
The annual supplement features review essays on significant domestic and foreign films released in the United States during the prior year. In addition to credits, a detailed synopsis, a signed critical commentary, and citations to additional reviews for each film, the work also includes an introductory year-in-review section, and an annotated list of selected film books published that year contributes to its value as a reference source.
A practical and useful work, the Film Review Annual reprints, in a single volume, the full text of selected reviews of films released in major U.S. markets during the year. It includes an "Also reviewed" section listing citations for reviews appearing in other publications such as the New York Times and Variety, for which the reprinting rights were not granted. Nominees and winners of the year's major film awards are also listed. Eight indexes -- to the cast, producers, directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, editors, music, and production crew -- make this work easy to use. Because the reviews are taken from publications ranging from popular newspapers, such as The Village Voice, to scholarly journals such as Cineaste, the work should appeal to scholars, students, and film enthusiasts.
With Volume 1 covering the period 1882-1949 and Volume 2 covering 1950-1985, the Film Review Index is "an attempt to fill the gap left by traditional indexes and to provide a retrospective bibliography of articles about specific films, which have, over the years, established themselves as being of the highest interest to researchers and students.… All articles, chapters and book citations listed under each film in the FRI deal primarily with that film either as a review, as history, or as critical commentary" (Introduction). A easy-to-use source for anyone interested in information on specific films released during the time periods covered.
Numerous biographical sketches of Woody Allen have been written in both book and essay form. Listed below are some considered to be of value for research purposes. An index to biographical material is also included for further reference.
Richard Schwartz combines elements of biography and criticism in this encyclopedia of Woody Allen's creative life and work. Arranged alphabetically and well-indexed, this compendium includes entries for Allen's films, plays, stories, awards, themes, influences and more, in an attempt to "take his work on its own terms and explore the complete vision that Allen realizes in his art" (Introduction), and show how he fits within the context of the great cinematic and literary tradition from which he draws. Both entertaining and informative, this work will be of value primarily for its discussion of the themes of Woody Allen's work to date.
For this authorized biography, Eric Lax, a personal friend of Woody Allen and the author of On Being Funny: Woody Allen and Comedy, was again given full access to Allen, his home, his friends and colleagues, and all aspects of his work. Written from the unique perspective of an insider who has witnessed Allen's evolution from gag writer to major filmmaker, this biography is full of details about Allen's background and career, and also grants the reader rare glimpses into Allen's work and artistic process.
Film professor and critic Douglas Brode profiles Allen's early life, his rise to comic stardom, and the development of his comic persona, and offers easily readable and insightful commentary on Woody Allen and his films to date. Brode's "paradox principle" premise--that Allen's "best moments, comic or otherwise, are those in which the image and words contradict one another" (p. 37)--is considered throughout his comprehensive study.
Between Volume I, covering the period 1890-1945, and Volume II, covering 1945-1985, this set provides introductions to the lives and work of approximately four hundred of the world's best-known film directors. Some of the book reflects original research, but the work is primarily the compilation of "information previously scattered through many reference books, monographs, histories, biographies, critical essays, reviews, and interviews" (Preface). Each article is followed by a filmography and a brief bibliography of books and essays on the director.
Woody Allen information: The entry for Woody Allen, at almost 10 pages long, does a good job describing not only his films, but also his influences, his favorite themes, and his experimentation and evolution as a filmmaker. A well-written essay, it provides thorough, analytical synopses of works through 1986.
These works represent volumes 26 and 44 of the Dictionary of Literary Biography series. Together, they provide a valuable introduction to, and assessment of, 129 significant screenwriters through biocritical essays produced by a scholar in the field. By concluding each well-written essay with bibliographic information for books and periodical articles on the subject, this source provides yet another useful starting place.
Woody Allen information: The well-illustrated entry for Woody Allen discusses not only his screenwriting efforts, but also how his plays, books, and recordings likewise mark his evolution to sophisticated artist. Providing a brief but analytical comment on each of his films through 1985, this work serves as yet another solid introduction to the man and his work.

Works of Scholarship and Criticism
Woody Allen and his films have been and will continue to be the subject of significant critical study. Each of the texts listed here offers a unique perspective on Allen's work.
Political Science professor Mary P. Nichols selects twelve of Woody Allen's movies for her discussion of Allen's art and its implications for modern life. Nichols suggests that Allen's films offer a moral education, in that they move from existential and nihilistic assumptions "to reveal the potential of the human soul for fulfillment in deeds of virtue and love" (Preface).
Philosopher Sander H. Lee analyzes the common philosophical themes shared by Woody Allen's films, from his early comedies through 1995. In its attempt to introduce innovative philosophical interpretations of Allen's work, this study is directed to the reader who has seen the films and is willing to reexamine them in a new context.
Focusing on twenty-three films both written and directed by Woody Allen, Jesuit priest, film professor and critic Richard A. Blake considers Allen's role as a religious and moral philosopher. By exploring the religious dimensions of Allen's work, Blake offers a unique analysis of the filmmaker and the evolution of his themes.
In this edition of the Cambridge Film Classics series, Sam B. Girgus presents a scholarly analysis of five of Woody Allen's films, carefully evaluating the filmmaker's artistic techniques and offering insights into the cultural significance of his films. Extensive footnotes make reference to a wealth of other critical literature.
This edition of the Perspectives on Film series combines significant reviews and scholarly essays to reflect the range of critical opinion, and lack of critical consensus, on Woody Allen's body of work through 1994.
This collection of scholarly essays covers the development of eighteen film genres. The essay on each genre begins with a historical and analytical overview covering common themes, influential directors, and the like. Following that is a review of the literature on the genre, a list of recommended readings, including books, essays, articles, and theses, and a filmography of the key movies within the genre. This arrangement is designed to assist the reader in comparing genres and to provide a foundation for further research.
Woody Allen information: Woody Allen is intelligently discussed at length in Wes D. Gehring's essays on Parody and Clown Comedy, and in William C. Siska's essay on The Art Film.
Interviews
References to interviews with Woody Allen can be found in many of the works cited elsewhere in this pathfinder. Three of the more recent and/or comprehensive interview sources are listed below.
Swedish writer, filmmaker, and critic Stig Björkman leads Woody Allen through his most comprehensive discussion of his quarter century of filmmaking. Discussions of Allen's ideas, themes, influences, artistic intentions and working methods abound.
This general-interest work attempts to entertain as well as inform, and is most valuable from a research perspective for its inclusion of the text of four interviews conducted by critics and journalists from 1973 to 1990. Three have appeared in print elsewhere, but Spignesi brings them together for ease of reference.
Note: Aside from an annotated bibliography, the balance of the book includes material more suited for fans than for serious study, but it nonetheless makes for interesting light reading, and may enhance the reader's enjoyment of Woody Allen's work.
If you have a RealAudio Player, you can click on any of the hyperlinked terms to hear individual segments of British journalist Andrew Duncan's 1998 interview with Woody Allen. Allen discusses his life, the nature of celebrity and Hollywood, his feelings about some of his films and their popularity, and more.
