Lyrics
When I was young, I was a reckless lad
And lots of fun with the girls I had;
I'd hug and kiss them just for fun,
And I've proposed to more than one.

Hi, hipperty, hopperty do,
How I love to sing to you,
How I could dance and sing with glee,
If I was as young as I used to be.

I am an old man as you can see,
Some eighty odd years of age am I,
My teeth is all gone, I can hardly see,
In fact, I'm almost blind in one eye.
But I'm a jolly old fellow as you can see,
But I'm not as young as I used to be.

Note from E.L. Simons (1952): Grandfather learned this song at Literary Society meetings in Howard, Kansas, in the 1890s. He said there were more [verses] about getting drunk, which he couldn't remember.
