Yoga Health Benefits


Two types of information on yoga health benefits are listed in this section.
1) Consumer health information: providing yoga related health information for consumers
2) Scholarly research: offering in-depth coverage of yoga biomedical research

As of 2008, these databases are all electronically available via UNC Libraries. Brief description of each database is listed under each database title. To avoid potential broken links, URLs are not listed here. Users are suggested to search the database by title on UNC libraries website.


Consumer Health Information

1. Alt-HealthWatch

a) Focusing on many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness
b) Providing full text articles from more than 180 international journals, magazines, reports, proceedings, association and consumer newsletters
c) The following yoga-related journals are included : Yoga World: International Newsletter for Yoga Teachers & Students; Journal of the International Association of Yoga Therapists; JOY: The Journal of Yoga
d) As of Nov 25 2008, searching "yoga" as a keyword yielded 9416 results


2. Health Source: Consumer Edition

a) Providing access to full-text of over 190 journals covering authoritative health information for consumers
b) Several health books and over 1000 health-related pamphlets are also available
c) Although this database does not cover journals exclusively dedicated to yoga, users can search yoga as a keyword or subject to find related information published in journals on medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine, and general health
d) As of Nov 25 2008, searching "yoga" as a keyword yielded 1143 results


3. MedlinePlus

a) Providing extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 750 health topics and drugs
b) Including directories of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia, a medical dictionary, and links to thousands of clinical trials
c) A yoga entry is inlcuded in the medical dictionary
d) As of Nov 25 2008, searching "yoga" in the Search MedlinePlus search box yielded 245 links to websites on yoga health benefits

 

Scholarly Research

Although databases like PsycINFO, CINAHL, and PubMed are not dedicated exclusively to providing information on alternative medicine, they serve as great complementary sources for biomedical research on yoga.

1. AMED (Alternative Medicine)

a) Providing citations to information on alternative treatments to conventional medicine, including complementary medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation, podiatry, palliative care, and others
b) Containing basic bibliographic records for relevant articles from over 500 journals, with the scope of coverage being mainly European
c) Many of the journals included in AMED are not indexed by other biomedical sources
d) As of Nov 25 2008, searching "yoga" as a keyword yielded 230 results


2. PsycINFO

a) The most comprehensive international database of psychology
b) Covering academic research and practice literature sources on psychology and related disciplines including alternative medicine
c) Many journals are available in full-text
d) As of Nov 25 2008, searching "yoga" as a keyword yielded 933 results


3. PubMed

a) Includes over 14 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's
b) Citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals
c) Providing full text articles and other related resources
d) As of Nov 25 2008, searching "yoga" as a keyword yielded 1181 results


4. CINAHL (The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature)

a) The world's most comprehensive source for nursing & allied health journals
b) Providing full text for more than 520 journals
c) Full-text coverage dates back to 1982
